My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions
— 1 Kings 12:10-11
Rehoboam, son of Solomon, faced a choice that would define his reign: listen to the wisdom of his elders or follow the advice of his peers. He chose the latter, and the consequences were disastrous. This story serves as a reminder that who we surround ourselves with has a profound impact on the choices we make, the path we walk, and the legacy we create.
While bloodlines and family ties often influence the advice we receive, they are not the sole sources of wisdom or guidance. Rehoboam's failure lay in his refusal to listen to those who had experience, those who had seen what he could not yet see. In contrast, we are encouraged to seek out those who can provide us with sound counsel, those who speak from a place of wisdom, compassion, and integrity — whether they are family or not.
Our journey of self-discovery is not a solitary one. The importance of finding our "tribe," a group of people who support and challenge us, cannot be overstated. It is through these connections — whether through friendships, professional relationships, or therapists — that we grow. The right people will help us see beyond our blind spots, give us the courage to change, and provide the guidance we need in moments of doubt.
As we navigate our own wilderness, may we choose to surround ourselves with those who encourage us to grow, those who help us walk in integrity, and those who hold a mirror to our best selves. Just as the kiss in Klimt’s painting conveys a deep connection and union, our relationships with others can serve as a grounding force that reminds us of our value and the direction we are meant to go.
Journaling Prompt: Who are the people in your life that uplift and guide you? How can you seek out more of this kind of support during this journey?
