When the World Split. The Three Layers of Consciousness: a phenomenological and ontological framework.
CAHSS Spring Research Conference at Bangor University, UK
WED 29 April 2026 | Speaker: Matilde Gliubich Tomat
This presentation introduces the “Three Layers” model, developed through my research on the emergence of consciousness. Layer 1 captures raw events as they occur: pure occurrence of phenomena in temporal sequence and no interpretation. Layer 2 thrives on mythic causality. It is the domain of embodied meaning-making, where pattern-seeking, time-awareness, and mark-making unfold as humanity attempts to survive and integrate this split. This encompasses art, ritual, and symbol as expressions of consciousness externalised. Layer 3 represents reflective, witnessing consciousness, integrating the separation of earlier layers. It is not a thing to be described but a being-in-awareness in which the subject–object split temporarily collapses.
These layers interlock with Six Stages of emergence previously presented: awareness of the invisible self, I/Thou separation, recognition of the invisible in others, spatial demarcation through mark-making, temporal consciousness, and shamanic transformation. The framework treats life events, bodily experience, and creative acts as primary data for consciousness studies. It offers a method to trace how meaning arises, how marks and art embody awareness, and how reflective consciousness integrates experience. This provides a running conclusion of my research and a contribution to interdisciplinary studies on awareness, embodiment, and the genesis of meaning.
